Mount St. Mary's freshman Shivaughn Wiggins has been named the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major National Freshman of the Year.
Wiggins, named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year, averaged 9.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals for the Mount this season. A five-time NEC Rookie of the Week recipient, Wiggins averaged 11.9 points, 2.3 assists and 2.1 rebounds in NEC games, shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 54.8 percent from three-point range.
The 5-10 guard was inserted into the starting lineup at Bryant on January 17, and averaged 13.7 points over the final 17 games.
Wiggins scored in double figures 15 times during the season with the Mount posting an 11-4 record in those contests. He had four 20-point games during the year, including a season-high 28 points in the Mount's 103-82 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on March 2.
One of the top on-the-ball defenders in the NEC, Wiggins finished the season with 36 steals, averaging 1.83 steals over the final 12 games of the year.
In addition to being the Mid-Major National Freshman of the Year, Wiggins was one of 21 players selected for CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Freshmen All-America team.
The Mount finished the 2012-13 season with an 18-14 record, falling to LIU Brooklyn in the NEC Championship game. It was the Mount's third appearance in the NEC final over the past six years.
