March 5, 2013--Mount St. Mary's freshman Shivaughn Wiggins (Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenburg) has been named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year. Wiggins, a five-time NEC Rookie of the Week recipient, is just the second Mountaineer ever to win NEC Rookie of the Year honors.
Wiggins is averaging 9.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game while starting 14 of 27 games played for the Mount this season. Since being inserted into the starting lineup 14 games ago, the freshman is averaging 14.6 points per game, shooting 52.3 percent from the field and 58.6 percent from three-point range.
Wiggins, who was also named to the NEC All-Rookie team, averaged 11.9 points, 2.3 assists and 2.1 rebounds in NEC games this year, shooting 50.8 percent from the floor and 54.8 percent from three-point range.
The 5-10 guard scored 20 or more points four times this year, including a career-high 28 points in the Mount's 103-82 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the final game of the regular season. Wiggins, one of the top on the ball defenders in the NEC, scored in double figures 13 times this year with the Mount going 10-3 in those contests.
The only other Mountaineer to win NEC Rookie of the Year honors was Chris McGuthrie in 1992-93.
The Mount finished the regular season with a 16-13 record, and earned the No. 5 seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament. Mount St. Mary's will play at No. 4 seed Bryant on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
