Mount St. Mary's freshman guard Shivaughn Wiggins was named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. It is the fifth time this year that Wiggins has earned the award.
The 5-10 guard averaged 22.0 points, 3.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds while helping the mount extend its win streak to seven games and earn the No. 5 seed in the NEC Tournament.
On Saturday, Wiggins tallied a career-high 28 points in the Mount's 103-82 win over Fairleigh Dickinson. He was 7-of-9 from the field and 13-of-15 from the charity stripe in the game. Wiggins opened the week with a team-high 16 points in the Mounts' 77-63 win at Monmouth.
Since being inserted into the starting lineup 14 games ago, Wiggins is averaging 14.6 points. He leads all NEC freshmen in scoring at 9.6 points per game and is shooting 47.7 percent from three-point range this year.
The five NEC Rookie of the Week awards are the most-ever in a season by a Mount player. Chris McGuthrie, who was the 1992 NEC Rookie of the Year, had four in his freshman season.
The Mount will play at fourth-seeded Bryant on Wednesday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the NEC Quarterfinals.
