Sam Prescott Named Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Player of the Week
The honors continue to roll in for Mount St. Mary's junior Sam Prescott, who was named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Player of the Week. Prescott averaged 31.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of Mountaineer victories last week.
The 6-3 guard had a night to remember, scoring a career high 44 points in the Mount's 84-70 victory against Bryant last Thursday. The 44 points are the most by a Mount player since the school moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89.
Prescott became just the fourth player in school history (104 seasons) to score 44 or more points in a game, joining Jack Sullivan (7 times), Dave Maloney and Mike Tate. The last Mountaineer to reach 44 points was Tate against Kutztown State on Nov. 24, 1987.
Chris McGuthrie held the previous Mount record for points in a game at the NCAA Division I level. McGuthrie scored 41 points in an 80-69 win over Robert Morris on Feb. 19, 1996
Prescott was 10-of-14 from three-point range in the victory, tying the school record for three-pointers made. Scott Murphy made 10 three-pointers in both 1989 (vs. Wright State) and 1991 (vs. Wagner).
Prescott scored eight points during a 16-to-5 run that gave the Mount a 31-21 advantage with 8:19 left in the first half. After Bryant cut the deficit to 31-26, Prescott tallied 10 of the Mount's final 11 points of the half to for a 42-28 lead at the break.
In the opening half, Prescott scored 28 points on 11-for-14 from the field and 6-of-8 from three-point range.
Prescott was 16-of-24 from the field, 10-of-14 from three-point range and 2-of-2 at the line for his 44 points. He added six rebounds and a pair of assists in 33 minutes in the game. Parker added 19 points and six rebounds for the Mount, hitting 5-of-7 from three-point range.
The junior guard followed with 18 points and six rebounds in the Mount's 89-80 victory against Central Connecticut State. He averaged 31.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals while shooting 59.5 percent from the field, 52.4 percent frmo three-point range, and 87.5 percent at the foul line for the week.
Prescott is averaging 11.0 points and a team-high 3.6 rebounds per game for the Mount on the year. He becomes the 13th player in Mount history to earn an NEC Player of the Week award. The list includes McGuthrie (7), Jeremy Goode (4), Landy Thompson (4), Gregory Harris (2), Kevin Booth (2), Kelly Beidler, Shawn Atupem, Gerben Van Dorpe, Riley Inge, Michael Watson, Phil Galvin and Alex Watson. THe Mount joined the NEC in 1989-90.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday, February 21, when NEC co-leader LIU Brooklyn visits Knott Arena for a 7:00 p.m. game.
