Mount St. Mary's freshman Shivaughn Wiggins (Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenberg) has been named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. It is the second consecutive week and fourth time this year he has earned the honor.
The 5-10 guard averaged 16.5 points, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals as the Mount split a pair of Northeast Conference games. Wiggins tallied a career-high 22 points in the Mount's 69-58 win at Saint Francis (Pa.) this past Saturday, going 5-for-9 from the field, 2-of-2 from three-point range, and 10-of-10 at the charity stripe. On Thursday, he had 11 points and four assists in the Mount's 74-65 loss at Wagner.
Wiggins has started each of the past eight games for the Mount, scoring in double figures seven times, including three games with 20 or more points. He is averaging a team-best 14.9 points per game over that stretch, hitting 52.5 percent from the field.
For the season, Wiggins is averaging 8.3 points while shooting 53.1 percent from three-point range and 81.5 percent at the foul line. In Northeast Conference play, he is averaging 10.8 points while shooting 50.0 percent overall, 68.4 percent from three-point range, and 81.5 percent at the line.
Wiggins has four NEC Rookie of the Week honors this season, matching him with Chris McGuthrie for the most all-time by a Mount player.
