Mount St. Mary's freshman Shivaughn Wiggins (Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenberg) has been named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. Wiggins averaged 16.0 points for the Mount last week, including a career-high 20 points in the Mount's overtime loss to Bryant.
Wiggins, a 5-10 guard, poured in his career-high 20 points in the 79-78 overtime loss to NEC leader Bryant this past Thursday. He was 8-for-10 from the field and 3-for-3 from three-point range in the game. His three-pointer with 12 seconds left forced the overtime period. Wiggins followed with 12 points in the Mount's 80-75 victory at Central Connecticut State on Saturday. He hit a pair of three-pointers in the game, including one during the Mount's 16-0 second-half run that helped the team rally to the win.
For the week, Wiggins was 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) from the field and 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from three-point range. He is averaging 5.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game this year, shooting 41.9 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from three-point range.
It is the second time this season that Wiggins has been named the NEC Rookie of the Week. He is the first Mount player to earn more than one NEC Rookie of the Week award since Jeremy Goode won it three times in the 2006-07 season.
