Mount St. Mary's Upends Navy, 72-65, to Extend Win Streak to Three
Emmitsburg, Md. (December 7, 2012)--Mount St. Mary's stretched its win streak to three games with a 72-65 victory over Navy on Friday night at Knott Arena. Junior Rashad Whack hit six three-pointers en route to 18 points to lead the Mountaineers in the game.
Whack hit the big shot in the game, a three-pointer with 4:20 left that gave the Mount a 63-58 advantage. Whack's three-pointer stopped a 15-to-3 run that saw Navy cut a 17-point deficit to two. On Navy's next possession, Whack got a steal, and the Mount converted when Sam Prescott drilled a three-pointer to push the advantage to 66-58.
Earlier in the second half, freshman Shivaughn Wiggins scored a lay-up off a steal to give the Mount (4-3) its biggest lead of the game, 50-33, with 17:51 left.
Whack finished with 18 points and four steals to pace the Mount in the game. Whack was 6-for-12 from three-point range in the contest. Prescott added 15 points and eight points off the bench while Julian Norfeet chipped in 11 points in the win.
Wiggins had eight points and six assists off the bench, as the Mount reserves combined for 38 points in the game.
Navy (5-6) was led by Tilman Dunbar's 18 points while Kendall Knorr (14), James Loupos (11) and Worth Smith (10) also reached double figures.
In the first half, Whack hit his first three three-point attempts to spark the Mount to an early 9-2 advantage. Mount St. Mary's continued to remain hot from beyond the arc, finishing 9-for-22 (.409) from three-point range in the opening half to take a 45-31 lead at the break.
Mount St. Mary's finished the game 13-for-35 from three-point range. The 35 three-point attempts are the fourth-highest single-game total in Mount history. The Mount also won the battle of turnovers, forcing 15 while committing just six.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, December 15, with a 7:30 p.m. game at longtime rival Loyola. It will be the 168th all-time meeting between the two schools with the Mountaineers holding a 96-71 advantage.
Game Notes: The Mount has won three consecutive non-conference games for the first time since December of 2008...The overall three-game win streak is the first since February of 2011...The last time the Mount had a winning record was December of 2002, when the team also had a 4-3 mark...Navy holds a 9-7 lead in the all-time series with the Mount...This was the Mount's first home win over Navy since December 30, 2002.
