Mount St. Mary's University head men's basketball coach Jamion Christian has announced the signing of Melvin Gregory (Weems, Va./Lancaster) to a National Letter of Intent to enroll at the Mount in the fall of 2012.
"We are thrilled to have Melvin as a member of our family here at the Mount," said Christian. "His length, athleticism and his passion for winning allowed him to grow into the state player of the year this past season. There is no doubt that these components will help him not only be successful here at the Mount, but also will add to our program's competitive nature."
Gregory, a 6-8 forward, averaged 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks for Lancaster High School his senior season, leading his team to the 2012 state championship. Gregory was named the Group A State Player of the Year, the Region A Player of the Year and the District Player of the Year this past season.
Gregory tallied 25 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocks in the state semifinals. He had two triple-doubles on the year, and scored a career high 31 points on two occasions. He had career averages of 18 points, 14 rebounds and 4.5 blocks at Lancaster High School.
He was named First Team All-District and Second Team All-Region as a junior. His high school team went 59-8 during his career and he played AAU ball with the Virginia Venom.
Gregory joins Christian Crockett (Houston, Texas/Travis), Gregory Graves (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) and Shivaughn Wiggins (Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenburg) as incoming freshmen for the 2012-13 school year.
"All four of our incoming freshman played for winning high school programs where they valued daily improvement," said Christian. "Because of this focus, each played late into their high school seasons."
