Mount St. Mary's returns to action by hosting American University on Thursday at Knott Arena. The Mountaineers are coming off a 45-41 loss at Savannah State on December 22.
In a hard-fought game, the Mount dropped a 45-41 game at Savannah State. The Mount pulled to a five-point first-half lead before the Tigers rallied to take a 27-26 lead at the break. Trailing 44-38, Josh Castellanos hit a three-pointer with just under two minutes left to cut the deficit to 44-41. The Mount got a pair of stops on the defensive end, but was not able to hit the equalizing shot. Julian Norfleet's three-point attempt with nine seconds left was off the mark and the Tigers hit 1-of-2 at the line to seal the win.
Norfleet leads the Mount in scoring at 10.9 points per game while chipping in 4.2 rebounds. Raven Barber is second on the team with 9.3 points per game with Danny Thompson adding 7.8 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds.
The Mount has picked it up on the defensive end, allowing 60.7 points over the past three games. The Mount offense, however, is averaging just 46.0 points over that span.
American has lost three consecutive games to fall to 8-5 on the season. The Eagles fell to Villanova, 73-52, on December 22 in their last game. Blake Jolivette led the Eagles with 19 points while Charles Hinkle added 17. Hinkle leads American in scoring at 21.3 points per game this year while Troy Brewer is chipping in 14.1 points.
American lost its first two games of the year before rattling off eight consecutive victories. The Eagles are 1-1 against Northeast Conference teams, defeating Quinnipiac (74-73) and falling at Saint Francis (Pa.) (66-61).
American holds a 31-28 lead in the all-time series with the Mount. The teams have met in each of the past six seasons with American winning four of those games. Last year, American defeated the Mount, 69-64, at Knott Arena.
The Mountaineers round out non-conference play on Saturday, December 31, with a 3:30 p.m. game against Albany at Knott Arena.
