Mount St. Mary's opens Northeast Conference play against St. Francis (N.Y.) Thursday. The Mountaineers are coming off a 64-56 loss at Navy on Sunday night. Freshmen Kelvin Parker (14 points) and Chad Holley (11 points) paced the Mount in the loss.
The Mount enters the game 1-4 on the season, having played four of the five contests on the road. The Mount has a balanced attack as Danny Thompson leads the way at 10.0 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks. Julian Norfleet (9.8), Josh Castellanos (8.8), Raven Barber (8.6) and Kelvin Parker (7.6) are also averaging over seven points.
St. Francis (N.Y.) is 1-4 this season, but is coming off a 79-60 win at NJIT on Saturday. Ben Mockford led the way against the Highlanders with 22 points (6-of-10 3's) while Akeem Johnson added 19 points and six boards. Travis Nichols leads St. Francis with 13.4 points and 7.0 rebounds while Mockford is second on the squad at 12.0 points per game.
The Mount will be opening its 23rd season in the Northeast Conference against the Terriers. The Mount is 10-12 all-time in NEC openers, but is 7-1 in NEC openers at Knott Arena. This will be the first time since the 2007-08 season that the Mount has opened NEC play at home. The Mount is 0-1 all-time against St. Francis (N.Y.) in NEC openers, falling 75-66 on the road on Dec. 23, 2003.
Mount St. Mary's holds a 28-26 lead in the all-time series with the Terriers, but St. Francis (N.Y.) has won three of the past four matchups. Last year, the teams split the season series with each winning on the road. The Mount won 70-61 in Brooklyn while St. Francis squeaked out a 63-60 victory in Emmitsburg.
The Mount hosts defending NEC champion Long Island on Saturday before heading to Maryland on Wed., Dec. 7.
