Emmitsburg, Md. (January 20, 2011)--Senior Shawn Atupem (Newport News, Va./Woodside) scored a season-high 20 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Sacred Heart, 61-45, in Northeast Conference action on Thursday night. Atupem was 8-for-9 from the field in posting his second career 20-point game.
Atupem finished the day with a season-high 20 points, six rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. The senior forward recorded a career-high 23 points last year in the regular season finale against Robert Morris.
Julian Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) added 13 points and five rebounds while Lamar Trice (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) chipped in 11 points and four boards in the victory. Chris Evans scored 15 points off the bench to pace Sacred Heart (7-11, 2-5 NEC) with Shane Gibson tallying 12 in the loss.
Trailing 15-13 midway through the first half, the Mount ended the half on a 17-to-3 run to take a 30-18 advantage. Mount St. Mary's (6-14, 4-3 NEC) held Sacred Heart to 1-of-12 shooting from the field over that span.
Atupem started the run with a jumper from the left corner and Danny Thompson (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers) added a dunk on a feed from Trice to put the Mount ahead, 17-to-15. Another Atupem bucket and a Josh Castellanos (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep) three-pointer stretched the margin to seven. Trice added a three-pointer, Tayvon Jackson (Indian Head, Md./Lackey) chipped in a lay-up and a free throw and Atupem ended the spurt with a basket in the paint for a 30-18 halftime advantage.
The Mount opened the second half with five straight points and extended the lead to as much as 18 points to cruise to the victory. Mount St. Mary's held Sacred Heart to 14-of-48 (.292) shooting in the game while forcing 18 turnovers. The Mount shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) in the contest.
Mount St. Mary's, which swept the season series with the victory, has won six in a row against Sacred Heart and leads the all-time series, 17-7.
