Brooklyn, N.Y. (January 13, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's lost at Long Island, 91-69, on Thursday night in Northeast Conference action. Shawn Atupem and Lamar Trice each scored 16 points to pace the Mountaineers in the game.
Atupem finished with 16 points and six rebounds while Trice added 16 points, hitting all eight of his free throw attempts in the game. Danny Thompson chipped in eight points and 10 boards off the bench with Jacolby Wells added seven points in the loss.
Kenny Onyechi led five Long Island (12-4, 4-1 NEC) players in double figures with 14 points. Jamal Olasewere added 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Blackbirds with Kyle Johnson scoring 11, Booker Hucks 10 and Arnold Mayorga 10.
The Mountaineers were 30-for-38 (.789) at the foul line in the game, but converted just 35.3 percent of their shots from the field. Long Island shot 50.8 percent overall and was 19-for-32 (.594) at the charity stripe.
The Blackbirds scored the first six points of the game and never trailed, pushing to a 45-25 lead at the half. The first half featured 29 fouls called and 44 free throw attempts combined by the two teams. The Blackbirds were 15-of-26 at the line in the opening half while the Mount was 14-for-18.
The Mount hit just 5-of-20 from the floor and committed 13 first-half turnovers while Long Island shot 45.2 percent in the first half.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, January 15, with a 4:00 p.m. game at St. Francis (N.Y.).
