Mount St. Mary's Holds Off Saint Francis (Pa.), 63-56

Emmitsburg, Md. (January 6, 2011)-Lamar Trice scored 18 points while Danny Thompson added his first career double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 63-56 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Thursday night.

Mount St. Mary's (4-12, 2-1 NEC) raced to a 19-point first half lead and held on for the victory, snapping an eight-game losing streak.

Trice scored five consecutive points to cap a 10-0 first-half run that gave the Mount an early 16-6 advantage. Mount St. Mary's continued the surge, pushing the lead to 29-12 on a Trice three-point basket with 6:27 to go in the half.

Julian Norfleet's free throw with 2:22 left in the half gave the Mount its biggest margin of the game, 36-17, before Saint Francis (Pa.) (2-12, 0-3 NEC) closed the half with a 5-2 run to make the score 37-22 at the break.

The Red Flash slowly whittled the lead Mount advantage down in the second half, cutting the deficit to 53-50 on an Anthony Ervin jumper in the lane with 50 seconds on the clock. On the ensuing possession, Trice dribble down the court on a fast break and found Thompson for a dunk that rattled home to give the Mount a 55-50 lead with 35 seconds on the clock.

After a pair of Chris Johnson free throws for Saint Francis (Pa.), Josh Castellanos hit 1-of-2 at the line for the Mountaineers. Tayvon Jackson pulled down the offensive board on the second free throw and was fouled, hitting both free throws that gave the Mount a 58-52 advantage. From there, the Mountaineers hit 5-of-6 at the line to seal the win.

Trice finished 7-of-14 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range for his team-high 18 points. He added six assists and two steals in the victory. Thompson had 10 points and 12 boards for his first career double-double in the victory while Castellanos chipped in 10 points and a pair of assists.

Mislav Jukic paced Saint Francis (Pa.) with 19 points and six rebounds while Umar Shannon added 16 points the loss. Saint Francis (Pa.) has now lost 10 games in a row.

The Mount shot 43.2 percent from the field in the game and was 4-for-6 from three-point range. Mount St. Mary's was 21-for-34 (.618) at the foul line in the contest.

The Red Flash shot 35.6 percent overall and was 3-for-12 (.250) from beyond the arc. Saint Francis (Pa.) was 21-for-25 at the charity stripe in the game.

The Mount returns to action on Saturday, January 8th, when rival Robert Morris visits Knott Arena for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.

Game Notes...The Mount has won 11 of the past 12 meetings against Saint Francis (Pa.) and now holds a 36-28 lead in the all-time series...The Mount is now 17-2 over its past 19 NEC regular season home games.
