Mount St. Mary's Clipped by American, 69-64

Emmitsburg, Md. (December 20, 2010)--Mount St. Mary's lost to American, 69-64, in a non-conference matchup at Knott Arena on Monday night. Lamar Trice (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) paced the Mount with 18 points and six assists in the loss.

American's Vlad Moldoveanu scored 18 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to help the Eagles (7-4) rally from a 31-27 halftime deficit. Moldoveanu hit 5-of-7 from three-point range in the game.

The Mountaineers (3-9) shot 50.0 percent from the field and committed just four turnovers in an efficient opening half to grab a four-point lead at the break. Senior Shawn Atupem (Newport News, Va./Woodside) scored 10 of his 14 points to pace the Mount offense while Trice chipped in six points and five assists in the half.

American opened the second half with a 20-to-6 run over the first 10 minutes to take a 47-37 lead. Moldoveanu scored the final eight points of the spurt, hitting a pair of free throws and back-to-back three-pointers. The Mount went 0-for-7 from the field during that streak, hitting 6-of-7 free throws to stay in the game.

trailing 49-39, Trice and freshman Julian Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) then heated up on offense for the Mountaineers, scoring the Mount's next 21 points, helping cut the deficit to three on four different occasions.

Trice hit a pair of free throws with 5:11 left to make the score 55-52 and he then added a jumper in the paint to make it 57-54 with 4:43 on the clock. American regained a six-point lead on three free throws, but Norfleet answered with a three-pointer from the left corner that rattled in, making the score 60-57 with 3:21 remaining.

American's Steve Luptak answered with a three-pointer on the next possession, but Trice responded with a fast-break lay-up and a free throw on the next two possessions to cut the deficit to 63-60 with 1:09 remaining. Stephen Lumpkins then converted a feed from Moldveanu for a lay-up to make it 65-60 with 36 seconds on the clock.

Raven Barber (Edgewood, Md./Paul VI[Va.]) scored in the lane to make it 65-62 with 26 seconds left. After a pair of Moldoveanu free throws, Atupem scored in the paint with six seconds on the clock to cut the deficit to 67-64. Moldoveanu, however, was fouled on the inbounds pass and sealed the win with two more charity tosses.

Trice hit 6-of-13 from the floor and finished with 18 points and six assists to lead the way for the Mountaineers. Atupem added 14 points and four rebounds while Norfleet chipped in 11 points and three boards in the loss. Barber added eight points and four rebounds for the Mountaineers.

Moldoveanu was 5-for-10 from the field (5-of-7 three-pointers) and 6-of-6 at the line for his game-high 21 points. Lumpkins added 16 points and six rebounds in the win.

American shot 52 percent in the second half and 43.6 percent for the game. The Mount shot 48.9 percent in the contest.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday, December 23, with a 2:00 p.m. (CT) game at Northwestern.

Game Notes...This was the Mount's first home game in three weeks...The Mount has lost five straight games...Mount St. Mary's first-year head coach Robert Burke was an assistant coach at American last season...American now holds a 31-28 lead in the all-time series.
