Emmitsburg, Md. (November 29, 2010)--Navy defeated Mount St. Mary's, 81-68, on Monday night at Knott Arena, snapping the Mountaineers 11-game homecourt win streak. Raven Barber (Edgewood, Md./Paul VI [Va.]) and Shawn Atupem (Newport News, Va./Woodside) each had 13 points in the loss.
The Midshipmen (3-6) used a 14-to-3 first-half run to take a 19-11 lead eight minutes into the game. The Mountaineers cut the deficit to 30-26 on a pair of Lamar Trice (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) free throws with 5:22 left in the half, but Navy closed the half on a 15-to-6 run to grab a 45-32 lead at the break.
Mark Veazey scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the first half, including a bucket at the buzzer on a feed from Brennan Wyatt that gave the Midshipmen a 13-point advantage. Navy hit 8-of-16 from three-point range in the first half while scoring 14 second chance points on six offensive rebounds.
In addition to Veazey, O.J. Avworo added 15 points while Isaiah Robert (11), Wyatt (10) and J.J. Avila (1) also reached double figures in the win.
Atupem finished the game with 13 points and seven rebounds while Barber added 13 points and six boards in the loss. Julian Norfleet added 10 points for the Mount while Trice had nine, David Golladay (Upper Marlboro, Md./Wise) had eight, Josh Castellanos (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep) seven and Danny Thompson (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers) six.
The Mount (2-4) cut the deficit to 10 on three different occasions in the second half, but could get no closer.
Navy shot 45.5 percent from the field in the game and hit 9-of-25 (.360) from three-point range in the contest. The Mount held a 42-to-28 advantage on the boards, but committed 20 turnovers in the game. Mount St. Mary's shot 38.5 percent overall and was 4-of-20 (.200) from beyond the arc.
