Mount Falls to Quinnipiac in Northeast Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

Hamden, Conn. (March 3, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's lost at Quinnipiac, 78-59, in the Northeast Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday night.  Senior Shawn Atupem paced the Mount with 20 points in the game.

Atupem hit 8-of-13 from the field and added four rebounds for his team-high 20-point game.  Freshman Julian Norfleet added nine points and five assists with David Golladay adding eight points, three rebounds and three assists in the loss.

Justin Rutty led the Bobcats (22-8) with 22 points and 16 boards while James Johnson added 13 points in the victory.

Leading by seven at the half, Quinnipiac scored the first six points of the second half to take a 47-34 advantage.  The Mount (11-21) was able to cut the deficit to nine points on three occasions, but could not get a defensive stop to cut into the margin any further.

A Jacolby Wells putback cut the deficit to 60-51 with 8:45 left, but Quinnipiac scored the next six points and went on to victory from there.

Quinnipiac held a commanding 43-24 advantage on the boards, including 18 on the offensive end that led to 26 second-chance points.  The Mount shot 42.0 percent in the game, including 9-of-29 (.310) in the second half.

The Mount sprinted out of the game, scoring the first eight points of the game.  Norfleet and Lamar Trice sandwiched three-pointers around a dunk by Barber in the run.  The Mount extended the lead to 13-4 after another Norfleet three-point basket and held a 17-9 advantage after an Atupem jumper six minutes into the game.

The Bobcats rallied, outscoring the Mount 22-to-5 over the next nine minutes to grab a 31-22 lead.  Rutty scored eight points to pace Quinnipiac's run.

The Mount used back-to-back three-pointers from Norfleet and Josh Castellanos to cut the gap to 37-32 before Quinnipiac rattled off four in a row ahead of a Trice bucket at the first half buzzer that made the score 41-34 in Quinnipiac's favor at the half.

Quinnipiac had a 9-0 edge in offensive rebounds in the first half, leading to a 16-0 margin in second chance points.

Game Notes:  The Mount defeated Quinnipiac, 80-70, in the NEC Quarterfinals in 2008 at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg in the only other playoff meeting between the two teams...Mount St. Mary's holds a 13-12 lead in the all-time series.
