Somerset, N.J. (May 21, 2018) - Mount St. Mary's University freshman pitcher Brenden Kennedy was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Kennedy rose to the occasion with his team looking to lock up an NEC Tournament berth on the final weekend of the regular season. Earning the start for game two of the Mount's three-game home set with first-place Bryant, the rookie righty pitched to an 0.83 WHIP while facing the conference leader in team batting average. Kennedy limited the Bulldogs, who average a league-high 6.6 runs per game, to one run on four hits. He kept Bryant off the scoreboard for the first 4.2 frames, but a two-out, fifth-inning solo homer ended the freshman's shutout bid. Kennedy, who retired the last three batters he faced, turned a 2-1 lead over to the bullpen to start the seventh.
In his first collegiate season, Kennedy has pitched 43.2 innings with 22 strikeouts and has posted a 5.77 ERA. In just conference play, Kennedy has logged 31.2 innings pitched with 14 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.69.
Kennedy and the Mount baseball team travel to Norwich, Connecticut for the first round of the Northeast Conference Championship with a matchup against the number one seeded Bryant Bulldogs on Thursday, May 24 at 12:00 PM.
