Late Comeback Lifts LIU Brooklyn Over Mount St. Mary's 11-8 In The First Game Of The Series

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 13, 2018) - Late comeback in the eighth inning lifts LIU Brooklyn over Mount St. Mary's 11-8 in the first game of the series on Friday afternoon. Vaughn Parker II, Zack Costello, Randall Minogue, and Jared Urban each recorded multi-hit games in the loss for the Mount. Minogue went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, two doubles, two runs scored, and a homerun to help lead the Mount offense. Urban added a 3 for 4 day with three runs batted in, a run scored, and a homerun. Senior, Jesse Archambault pitched a solid 1.2 innings in relief while giving up no runs on no hits and striking out one batter.

The Blackbirds scored the first three runs of the game to take an early 3-0 lead. Gregory Vaughn was plated off of an error in the top of the first for the first run of the game. With two outs in the top of the second inning, Andrew Smith hit a two run homerun to left-center field that brought Dom Paiotti home to cross the plate with him for the Blackbirds' third run of the game. 

The Mount climbed back in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at three runs apiece. Thomas Savastio singled to right field to lead things off and was brought home off of a two run homerun from Minogue to score the Mountaineers' first two runs of the game. Senior, Brendan Dabagian scored the tying run later in the inning off of a wild pitch.

Mount St. Mary's took a one run lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth inning before both teams pushed four runs a crossed the board in the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Dabagian reached base off of a bunt single and later stole second to get the inning started for the Mount. Urban recorded a sacrifice bunt that advanced Dabagian to third base with one out. With two outs in the inning, Dabagian was plated off of another wild pitch for the fourth run of the game for the Mountaineers.

LIU plated all four of their runs in the top of the fifth inning off of three singles to take a temporarily 7-4 lead. The Mount once again came back to take a one run lead after scoring four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Minogue hit a double to left-center field that plated Costello for the first run of the inning. After Dabagian worked a walk, Urban plated Minogue and Dabagian off of his first homerun of the year over the right field fence to help Mount St. Mary's take a 8-7 lead after five innings of play. 

After two scoreless innings, the Blackbirds scored four runs in the top of the eighth to secure the 11-8 win. Joe Curcio and Andrew Smith each plated two runs off of a pair of two run homeruns for LIU Brooklyn.

Brendan Kennedy (1-2) recorded the loss for the Mount and Mike Kreiger (3-1) picked up the win for the Blackbirds. With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 8-20 on the year with a 2-8 mark in Northeast (NEC) conference play and with the win, LIU moves to 16-13 on the year with a 7-4 mark in NEC play.

These two teams will play a doubleheader in Emmitsburg tomorrow, April 14 with the first game starting at 1:00 PM.
