The Mount St. Mary's baseball team opens the 2018 season with a single game at home against Coppin State. The Mountaineers' season opener is set for Wednesday, February 21 at 2 p.m.

ABOUT THE MOUNT
The Mountaineers are coming off an 8-win season and an 5-23 mark in Northeast Conference play in 2017. The infield tandem of Alex Kriss and Patrick Causa are returning to the Mount for their junior seasons. Causa led the team in RBI (26), while Kriss was top-three in batting average (.259). Also, returning for his junior year, Vaughn Parker II. Parker led the Mount in batting average (.298), home runs (3), and was top-two in RBI (22). Returning sophomore, Jared Urban, led the team in stolen bases (5), and was top-three in home runs (2).

FRESH FACES
Mount St. Mary's bolstered its roster for the 2018 campaign with the addition of 9 freshmen. Pitchers Jordan Geber (Pasadena, Md. ), Brenden Kennedy (York, Pa.), and Michael Yetter (Bel Air, Md.) , catcher Matthew Kephart (Hummelstown, Pa.), pitcher/first baseman Andrew Malone (Williamsport, Pa.), outfielder C.J. Kozorosky (Olney, Md.), first baseman/outfield Thomas Savastio (Camp Hill, Pa.), and utility men Myles Nicholson (Falling Waters, WV.), and Andrew Revels (Pasadena, Md.), each enter their rookie season with the Mountaineers.

ABOUT COPPIN STATE
The Golden Eagles opened up it season with a split of a doubleheader at North Carolina A&T on Sunday afternoon.  After dropping an 11-inning heartbreaker, 3-2 in the opener, Coppin State defeated the Aggies, 9-5 in the nightcap. McIlwain, Lohr and Castillo all had multi-hit efforts in the nightcap as every Eagles starter had a hit.  Castillo also walked twice while Saar followed up his three-hit effort in the opener with a pair of RBI in the nightcap. Coppin got a combined 22 base hits in the doubleheader with ten in game one and 12 in game two. The Golden Eagles head to Mount St. Mary's with a 1-1 record.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Mount St. Mary's and Coppin State have met 31 times in series history with the Mountaineers holding a 24-6-1 advantage, including a 16-3-1 mark in Emmitsburg. The two teams split the season series in 2017 at two games apiece. The Mount won the second of the two games last season, with a 7-3 win at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. Causa scored three runs off of three walks and Urban added one run batted in.

UP NEXT
The Mount heads to Florida for the Snowbird Classic. The Mountaineers will take on Chicago State (Feb. 24), and Minnesota (Feb. 25) before having a three game series with St. Bonaventure (Feb. 27 – March 1). Then the Mount will battle against Presbyterian (March 2) and Georgetown (March 3) before coming back home.
