Emmitsburg, Md. (April 30, 2017) - Zach Call throws two hit shutout in the first game that helped Mount St. Mary's split the doubleheader against Sacred Heart on Sunday. The Mount won the first game 7-0 behind Call's pitching but fell just short of the second game as the Pioneers won 7-4.
Game 1: Mount 7, Sacred Heart 0
Dalton Clouser, Will Enrico, and Dennis Stewart each had a multi-hit game and combined for five of the teams seven runs batted in that helped lead Mount St. Mary's to a 7-0 win over Sacred Heart in the first game. Call pitched seven shutout innings while only giving up two base hits while recording the win.
The Mount jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning from a single by Enrico that plated Jared Urban and a single by Stewart that scored Clouser.
The Mountaineers added another run in the bottom of the second, two more runs in the bottom of the third and one run in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. Enrico hit a RBI single in the second that brought Clouser in to cross the plate. Clouser singled in the third that plated Sean Kelly and Alex Kriss scored on an error later in the inning.
Kriss hit a single in the fourth that plated Zach Hostetter and Causa was brought in to score in the fifth inning off of a double from Enrico to make it a 7-0 game.
Zach Call (4-3) picked up the win for Mount St. Mary's while Kevin Czapelski (2-4) picked up the loss for Sacred Heart.
Game 2: Sacred Heart 7, Mount 4
Enrico and Kriss recorded multi-hit games but the Mount's late rally fell just short as Sacred Heart sneaked past for the 7-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader. Trey McGough pitched six and a third solid innings in relief while only giving up one run.
The Pioneers erupted for six runs in the top of the third inning and added one run in the top of the fourth inning to start off the game hot. Anthony Capoziello hit a double that plated Ted Shaw that started the scoring in the second and an error brought the sixth run of the inning in to score. A wild pitch brought in Sacred Heart's seventh run of the game in the fifth inning that made it a 7-0 game.
The Mount started a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning when Josh Lenig singled to right center field that plated Enrico and the next batter, Kriss, hit a RBI double to right field that brought Hostetter in to cross the plate to make the score 7-2.
Enrico hit a two run home run down the left field line that brought Causa along with him to score in the bottom of the eighth that made it a 7-4 game but the comeback fell just short when Mount St. Mary's could not score any more runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Seth Schubert (0-8) received the loss in the decision for the Mountaineers while Baylor Sundahl (3-5) received the win for the Pioneers and Mike Lembo recorded his third save of the season.
The Mount's next home game is this Wednesday, May 3rd against Coppin State at 3:30.
