Emmitsburg, Md. (April 10, 2013)--Mount St. Mary's lost to Towson, 12-7, on Wednesday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. Junior Nick Walker went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the loss for the Mountaineers.
Mount St. Mary's starter Scott Nickerson breezed through the first two innings, retiring all six batters, before running into trouble in the top of the third. Brendan Butler was hit by a Nickerson pitch to start the inning before Kurtis Voytell, Cody Reeves and Zach Fisher each doubled to put Towson in front, 3-0.
The next batter walked, and Jordan Lawson came on in relief for the Mountaineers. Hunter Bennett and Peter Bowles added RBI singles to give Towson a 5-0 lead.
Brandon Gonnella had a two-run double for Towson in the top of the fifth before the Mount (6-21) got back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Walker doubled to open the frame and moved to third on a Tommy Quealy base hit to center. Zach Smith drove home Walker with a sacrifice fly to center field to get the Mount on the scoreboard.
Quealy then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Jay Knight walked, and stole second base to put runners on second and third with one out. The steal was Knight's team-leading 15th of the year. Zane Bard walked to load the bases, and Quealy then scored on a wild pitch. Mark Quaranta's RBI grounder to second drove home Knight to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Kurt Wertz hit two run homers in both the sixth and seventh innings for Towson (17-16) while Bennett added an RBI single in the ninth to stretch the lead to 12-3. The Mount made things interesting with four runs in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score 12-7.
Walker started the Mount's rally in the ninth with a double down the left-field line. He came around to score on Pete DeCandia's RBI single up the middle. Brandon Scott walked and Knight hit a double to left-center field to cut the Towson advantage to 12-5. Quaranta hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and Sam Nott's base hit to right scored Knight with the final run of the contest.
Walker led the Mountaineers offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of doubles. Nott added two hits while Quaranta drove home a pair of runs.
Wertz led Towson, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI while Voytell was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored in the win.
Nickerson allowed four runs in two-plus innings for the Mount to take the loss. Lawson (2 IP, 1 ER), Buddy Fields (1 IP, 4ER), Alain Girman (2 IP, 2 ER), Thomas Williams (1.1 IP, 1 ER) and Austin Bonadio (0.2 IP, 0 ER) all pitched in relief in the game.
The Mount is now off for a week before returning to action at Maryland on Wednesday, April 17.
