Mount Baseball Loses Two to Monmouth on Saturday

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 6, 2013)--Mount St. Mary's was swept by Monmouth in a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.  The Mount lost the opening game, 7-2, before falling to the Hawks, 13-1, in the nightcap.

After Monmouth scored in the top of the second on Casey Saverio's bloop single to left field to take the lead, the Mount (6-19, 2-9 NEC) countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.  Mark Quaranta walked and Mo Moriarty singled to left to start the rally.  Nick Walker's sacrifice bunt moved the runners over for Andrew Clow, who drove home Quaranta with a sacrifice fly.  Zach Smith then singled up the middle to plate Moriarty for a 2-1 advantage.

Jon Guida's RBI single in the third evened the score, and the Hawks took the lead for good with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Monmouth sealed the win with three runs in the top of the sixth.

Jordan Lawson allowed seven runs (five earned) while striking out four in 5.1 innings to take the loss for the Mount.  Scott Nickerson and Nick Riley combined for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

In the second game, Quaranta walked with two outs in the bottom of the first, and Moriarty drove him home with a double to center field to stake the Mount to a 1-0 advantage.

Monmouth (15-11, 8-3 NEC) responded with Connor White's three-run homer in the top of the second for a 3-1 lead.  The Hawks took control of the game when Guida belted a grand slam in the third for a 7-1 lead.

Connor Graber allowed seven runs in three innings in game two for the Mount.

Quaranta went 3-for-4 with three walks for the Mount in the twinbill while Moriarty and Smith each were 3-for-5 in the two games.

The teams complete the four-game series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
