Mount St. Mary's Falls to Lehigh, 10-9, in 12 innings

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 16, 2013) -- Mount St. Mary's fell to Lehigh, 10-9, in 12 innings while battling rainy conditions at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Mark Quaranta and Brandon Scott picked up two hits apiece for the Mount on the day.

With two outs and a runner on second base, Casey Turner hit an RBI single up the middle in the top of the 12th in what proved to be the game-winning run for Lehigh (10-6).

The game went to extra innings when Lehigh's Connor Faust doubled to left to tie the game at 8-8 in the top of the ninth.

The Mount (4-10) was aggressive on the base paths with back-to-back sacrifice bunts in the bottom of the second to get the scoring going. With the bases loaded, Brandon Scott laid down a successful bunt to score Mo Moriarty and a throwing error on the play allowed Zane Bard to score as well. The next batter, Jay Knight, bunted again to score Nick Walker. Mark Quaranta followed up with a two-RBI single for a 5-0 lead.

The Mountain Hawks got one run back in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly.

The Mount went back to the suicide squeeze in the bottom of the third with Zane Bard bunting to score Andrew Clow for a 6-1 lead.

Lehigh battled back with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 6-5 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Heads up base running by the Mount led to runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Nick Walker scored from third on a wild pitch in the sixth, and Bard's sacrifice fly to center allowed Clow to touch home in the seventh.

With the Mount clinging to an 8-6 advantage in the top of the ninth, Faust's two-out knock forced extras.

The Mount needed a run to stay alive in the bottom of the 10th after Lehigh's Brandon Wilt hit a lead-off home run in the top of the frame. Tommy Quealy came through by picking up an RBI groundout to plate Scott and even the score at 9-9 before Lehigh managed a run in the top of the 12th for the win.

Connor Graber started and pitched 5.2 innings for the Mount, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out three. Nick Cassel pitched the final two innings for Lehigh to earn the victory.

Lehigh picked up 13 hits to the Mount's 11. Wilt led the Mountain Hawks' attack with three hits and three runs scored.

The Mount will open Northeast Conference play with a four-game set at Bryant March 22-24.
