Emmitsburg, Md. (March 15, 2013) -- With the score tied at 8-8 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Jay Knight hit a walk-off single to right field to give Mount St. Mary's a 9-8 win against Lehigh on Friday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
The Mount (4-9) held an 8-5 lead and with a 3-2 count with two outs in the top of the ninth, Lehigh's Tyler Brong knocked a three-run home run over the fence in left field to even the score at 8-8. In the bottom of the 10th, however, Zane Bard recorded a leadoff single and was moved over by a Brandon Scott sacrifice bunt before Knight delivered the game-winning hit.
Patrick Walsche hit a home run in the top of the first for a 1-0 Lehigh (9-6) advantage. The Mount took the lead with runs in the bottom of the second and third innings.
The Mount grew its lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth with five runs. In the frame, the Mount hit around the order and picked up three hits and two walks, being helped by two Lehigh errors. With the bases loaded and one run already across, Mark Quaranta cleared the bases with a double to left to plate three. Quaranta scored when the next batter, Sam Nott, singled down the line in left.
Nick Walker's home run in the fifth made it 8-1 in favor of the home side.
Lehigh cut into the Mount's advantage with four runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to make the Mount's lead 8-5.
The late inning heroics by Knight capped a 2-6 day that included two RBIs and two runs scored.
Seven different pitchers took to the mound on Friday for the Mount with the starter, Alain Girman, going five strong innings with six hits and one run with five strikeouts.
For Lehigh, Justin Pacchioli and Casey Turner both recorded four hits. Kevin Long, who pitched 5.2 innings in relief, took the loss for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh outhit the Mount, 14-11, but committed three fielding errors on the day.
The Mount and Lehigh are scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon.
