Emmitsburg, Md. (February 15, 2013)--Mount St. Mary's opened the 2013 season with a 10-7 victory over Iona at Waldron Family Stadium on campus on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Thomas Williams picked up the win, allowing one earned run in five innings of work.
Iona (0-1) scored an unearned run in the top of the first before the Mount answered on Mark Quaranta's RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning.
The Gaels made it 2-1 with a run in the second, but the Mount took a 4-2 advantage with three runs in the bottom of the third.
Williams pitched out of a jam in the fourth. Iona had runners on second and third with a run in and one out in the inning, but Williams got out of the inning with the Mount retaining the 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tom Healy had a clutch two-run single in a three-run inning that pushed the Mount lead to 7-3. The Mountaineers added three more runs in the eighth for a 10-3 advantage.
Iona made things interesting in the ninth, scoring four times, but Nick Riley was able to get the final out to preserve the win.
Williams allowed three runs (one earned) with three strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. Freshman Jordan Lawson pitched three innings of scoreless relief, striking out three in his collegiate debut.
Sam Nott went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Mount as well.
The teams are schedule to complete the three-game series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow.
