Emmitsburg, Md. (May 10, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's lost to Central Connecticut State, 9-0, in the opening game of a four-game Northeast Conference series on Friday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
The Blue Devils (25-22, 16-13 NEC) took the early lead on a two-run home run by JP Sportman in the top of the first and a Jake Matuszak sacrifice fly in the second.
The Mount threated in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with two outs, but CCSU starter Harry Glynne got out of the jam with a strikeout.
The Blue Devils then took control with a four-run third inning. AJ Lowers had a sacrifice fly and Anthony Turgeon followed with a three-run home run to give CCSU a 7-0 advantage.
CCSU added single runs in the fifth and eighth innings to complete the scoring.
Glynne scattered four hits while striking out seven in the complete-game shutout victory. Sportman finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Blue Devils.
The teams continue the four-game series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at the Mount's E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
