Baseball Loses Opening Game of Series to LIU Brooklyn, 11-3
Emmitsburg, Md. (April 5, 2012)--Mount St. Mary's opened a four-game Northeast Conference series with an 11-3 loss to visiting LIU Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. Josh Winter went 1-for-2 with two RBI in the loss for the Mountaineers.
The Blackbirds (12-17, 4-5 NEC) took an early 1-0 lead on a Brad Greve base hit in the top of the third inning.
The Mount (9-22, 2-11 NEC) broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. Michael Foster and Jay Knight were each hit by a pitch to start the inning. Mark Quaranta moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, and Winter came through with a two-run single to give the Mount a 2-1 lead.
LIU answered with a run in the top of the fifth on a Tyler Jones two-out RBI single, but the Mount answered back in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Mo Moriarty doubled to open the bottom of the fifth and stayed at second on Nick Walker's infield single. Moriarty moved to third on a pop fly to right field, and then scored on Brandon Scott's base hit.
The Blackbirds took the lead for good with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth. Drew Walsh and Jesse Brown each had two-out RBI singles in the inning. The Blackbirds added two runs in the seventh and then scored five times in the ninth to secure the victory.
Moriarty went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored for the Mount, which managed just five hits off LIU starter Chris Franzese.
The teams continue the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 p.m. at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
