Princess Anne, Md. (March 28, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon. Sam Nott went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the victory.
After allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the first, the Mount took the lead with a five-run outburst in the top of the third inning. Foster doubled to lead off the inning and he came around to score on a Quaranta base hit. Winter doubled and Nott came through with a two-run single to give the Mount (7-19) a 3-1 lead. Ryan Owens added a sacrifice fly and Jay Knight an RBI single in the inning.
Josh Winter's RBI single in the sixth pushed the Mount lead to 6-1 before UMES (2-22) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth when Jeffrey Fleetwood tripled home a run and then scored on a sacrifice fly.
Starting pitcher Ben Smallenbroek allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings of work to pick up the victory. He struck out a pair while allowing six hits to move to 2-2 on the year. Scott Nickerson pitched a scoreless seventh while Dan Horner struck out three in two scoreless innings to pick up his second save.
The Mount swept all three games in the season series and has won 12 in a row against the Hawks. The Mount holds a 27-4 lead in the all-time series that began in 1994.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action this weekend with a four-game Northeast Conference series against Wagner that begins at Friday, March 30, at 1:00 p.m. at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
