Emmitsburg, Md. (March 20, 2012)--Mount St. Mary's lost to Bucknell, 7-3, in a non-conference matchup at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Mark Quaranta went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Mount in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's starter Thomas Williams retired the first six batters of the game, but ran into trouble in the top of the third. After a pair of singles, Bob Donato lofted a home run just over the fence in the right field corner to give the Bison a 3-0 lead. Donato added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Matt Lamore's two-run double in the sixth and David Duffett's RBI double in the ninth pushed the lead to 7-0.
The Mount (5-14) made things interesting in the ninth, scoring three times, to round out the scoring. Ryan Owens doubled, moved to third on a Jack Schwartz pinch-hit single, and scored on Brandon Scott's single to right. Michael Foster loaded the bases with a single to center for Nick Walker. Walker grounded into a fielder's choice at second to plate Schwartz, and Scott then scored when the first baseman did not field the throw on the double-play attempt. Bucknell closer Alex Cillo retired the final out to seal the win.
The Mount outhit Bucknell, 12-to-7, in the game. Quaranta led the way with his 3-for-4 day while Sam Nott, Owens and Scott all went 2-for-4 in the loss.
The Mount returns to action tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. at Navy.
