Baseball Falls to Saint Louis, 13-11, in Season Opener
Winter Haven, Fla. (February 24, 2012)--Mount St. Mary's was outslugged by Saint Louis, 13-11, in the season opener on Friday afternoon in Florida. The top four hitters in the Mount lineup went 11-for-18 with seven runs scored and seven RBI.
After falling behind 4-1 early in the game, the Mount scored three times in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 6-4 advantage. The Billikens (3-2) rallied to take a 13-6 advantage after seven innings. The Mount loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, and after cutting the deficit to 13-11, twice had the tying run at the plate.
Leadoff hitter Nick Walker went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI while Mark Quaranta was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Freshman Ryan Owens hit third and was 2-for-4 with three runs scored while cleanup hitter Josh Winter went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four runs batted in.
Starting pitcher Vincent Molesky allowed four runs and six hits in 4.1 innings, striking out four while walking one.
The teams continue their four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow.
