EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 27, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's baseball went into extra innings to get their first win of the season, walking off on an error in the ninth during the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. After the 5-4 victory, the Mount fell 5-1 in the last game of the series.
Thomas Bramley led the charge in the opener, hitting his third home run of the series in the first inning. This shot was good for three runs, driving home
Ryan Fisher and
Tristan McAlister. The senior catcher went 4-for-12 with his three homers, seven runs driven in, two walks and a stolen base.
Starting pitcher
Bryant Shives retired six of his seven batters of the season before Lehigh rallied to tie in the third. Shives finished with four innings, holding the Mountain Hawks at bay in each other frame.
Lehigh took the lead in the sixth and had a chance to seal a victory in the bottom of the seventh, but Mount St. Mary's rallied.
Shane Wockley led off with a single and
Kai Cummings pinch ran for him. A sac bunt and grounder moved him to third, and
Nick Fleming stepped in as a pinch-hitter. Down to the last out, Fleming whacked a double to send home Cummings and tie the score.
After a Lehigh double in the eighth, reliever
Jake Andrews came in for the Mount, ultimately holding the runner at third. He would retire the side in the ninth to keep the game level at 4-4.
Fleming walked in the bottom half and
Hunter Hebert followed with a single, and
Matt McTighe – pinch running for Fleming – advanced to second. The Mountain Hawks made a pitching change, bringing an infielder to the mound. One pitch later, Fisher hit a pop up down the line. The shortstop had a chance to end the threat, but dropped the ball and McTighe scored to secure the win.
Game two featured another rally by the Mountaineers. Shortened to seven innings after the first game went into extras, Lehigh burst out of the gate, scoring four times by the second inning. The Mount was kept quiet until the sixth, when
Giovanni Calamia scored on a wild pitch.
An insurance run by the Mountain Hawks made it 5-1 heading into the last of the seventh. Mount St. Mary's walked the bases loaded – first
Tyler Grodell, then Wockley, then
Brady Drawbaugh. With nobody out, the Mount brought the tying run to the plate three times. A fly out, strikeout and grounder later, the rally ended and Lehigh emerged victorious.
Ending the series at 1-3, the Mount turns their attention to Lamar. A four game set begins in Beaumont, Texas on March 4
