Mountaineers Shut Out in San Francisco; Heads to UC Davis

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (March 4, 2020) - For the third time this season, Mount St. Mary's baseball was shut out by an opponent. The team dropped its seventh straight, finding themselves on the wrong end of a 6-0 decision to the San Francisco Dons at Benedetti Diamond.

Mount was limited to eight baserunners for the game, divided evenly between hits and walks. Dons pitchers also racked up nine strikeouts against the Mountaineers' battery. Catcher Thomas Bramley reached base three times, courtesy of two walks and a single.

The visitors did manage to keep the game close thanks to pitching. Through the first seven innings, the Mount's arms conceded just one earned run - a homer by Nick Yovetich in the second inning. Brenden KennedyBlake Beal and Derek Huff delivered clean outings in relief.

San Francisco produced an RBI single for a 2-0 lead in the sixth before busting the game open with a four run eighth. Leadoff hitter Tyler Villaroman went 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of runs driven in.

Mount St. Mary's now turns their attention to the UC Davis Aggies. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Mount's focus will be to return their team batting average back over the Mendoza Line. After hitting .240 following opening weekend against St. Bonaventure, the average has slumped back down to .198. Vaughn Parker II is the only Mountaineer who qualifies to earn an average over .300. The redshirt senior is 8-for-20 (.400), adding eight walks.

On the pitching side, the squad's ERA has been steadily lowering since it peaked at 11+ opening weekend. Relievers have been key to that success, with the top five ERA's coming out of the bullpen.

The Aggies are coming off a grueling three-game set with Loyola Marymount, with their only win coming in 24 innings with a 4-3 final. Spencer Gedestad leads UC Davis in average at .356, and Nate Freeman leads with a 1.20 ERA. Game 1 starter Brett Erwin has also had a positive start to the season, registering a 3.00 ERA and a win across 15 innings pitched.

Mount returns home after their Spring Break trip for midweek contests against Navy (March 10) and Coppin State (March 11).
