Mount St. Mary's Baseball Opens the 2017 Season at New Mexico State This Weekend

The Mount St. Mary's baseball team opens the 2017 season with four games at New Mexico St. this weekend. The Mountaineers' season opener is set for Friday, February 24 at 6 p.m. MT. They will follow that game with a pair of games on Saturday February 25. The first game of the double header will be at 2 p.m. MT followed by the second game right after. On Sunday, February 26, the Mount wraps up its trip to New Mexico with a 12 p.m. MT contest.

ABOUT THE MOUNT
The Mountaineers are coming off an 11-win season and an 8-24 mark in Northeast Conference play in 2016. The infield tandem of Alex Kriss and Patrick Causa are returning to the Mount for their sophmore seasons. Kriss led the team in batting (.263) while Causa was top-three in RBI (13). Also, returning for their senior year are Zach Hostetter and Tyler Post. Hostetter was top-two in batting average (.256) and RBI (15) while Post was the team leader in home runs last season (4).

FRESH FACES
Mount St. Mary's bolstered its roster for the 2017 campaign with the addition of 9 freshmen. Pitchers Sean Flynn (West Chester, Pa.), Trey McGough (Johnstown, Pa.), and Cole Reeder (Mill Hall, Pa.) , catcher Zach Adams (Berlin, Md.), catcher/first baseman Sean Kelly (Horsham, Pa.), outfielders A.J. Narcise (West Chester, Pa.), and Jared Urban (Coatsville, Pa.), first baseman/outfield Damond Nixon (Baltimore, Md.), and infielder Thomas Esposito (Reisterstown, Md.), each enter their rookie season with the Mountaineers.

ABOUT NEW MEXICO STATE
The Aggies are coming off a 16-1 loss to #21Texas Tech on Tuesday. New Mexico State jumped out to grab the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Dan Hetzel recorded a sacrifice fly and an RBI. Texas Tech would tie the game in the bottom of the second and would score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third. The Red Raiders would be too much to handle for the Aggies, scoring fourteen unanswered runs to take control of the game. New Mexico State was just 1-for-10 with runners on base and 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. The Aggies gave up 16 runs on 18 hits to the Red Raiders while managing to get just one run on two hits themselves.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES
This is the first all-time meeting between the Mount and New Mexico State.
