Gravante is in his 15th season at the helm of the Mount men’s lacrosse program. A three-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Gravante has seen the Mount advance to the MAAC title game five times in his career.
This past season, he guided the Mount to the No. 2 seed at the MAAC Tournament after being picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll.
After sitting out 2005 to concentrate on his health, Gravante returned to the sidelines and promptly led the Mount to the MAAC title game. In 2003, Gravante earned his third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Award after guiding the Mount to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He continually has the Mount at the top of the MAAC as his teams have posted an incredible 71-16 record in MAAC regular season games since the league was formed in 1996.
The Mount has qualified for the MAAC Tournament in six of the seven seasons it has been held. In 1999, Gravante guided the Mountaineers to the MAAC regular season title, sweeping the conference slate, and a school-record 11 wins, earning MAAC Coach of the Year honors for the second time in three years. In 1997, he led his charges to the program's first winning season since 1991.
Gravante was named the recipient of the Howdy Myers Man-of-the-Year Award by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association in July 2002. He joined former coaching legends Bob Scott of Johns Hopkins and Carl Runk of Towson as one of 15 to be honored as the USILA's Man of the Year since 1988. He was selected to be one of the coaches for the annual USILA North-South Game in June 2003.
As a player at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., Gravante helped lead the Statesmen to the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth of 12 straight Division III titles won by the Upstate New York powerhouse. For over 10 years, he held Division III tournament records for goals in a game (seven) and goals in the tournament (17). Gravante graduated from Hobart in 1988 with a degree in economics. He was recently inducted into Hobart’s Hall of Fame. After graduation, Gravante proceeded to work at General Electric in Syracuse in manufacturing test engineering.
Following his term at GE, he owned and operated a fitness center in his hometown of Camillus, N.Y. When offered the opportunity to pursue his MBA degree and coach lacrosse, he decided to return to the game as assistant coach at Mount St. Mary's for the 1993 season. Upon the resignation of A.J. Russo, he was promoted to head coach. In fall of 1995, he was promoted to full-time status.
Gravante lives in Frederick with his wife Nicole and two children . In May of 1998, he received his Master of Business Administration degree with honors from Mount St. Mary's.
