Emmitsburg, Md. (August 29, 2008)--The Mount St. Mary's men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2008 season hosting the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals on campus. The Mount women finished in fourth place while the Mount men's team placed fifth. The meet was scored in a multiple-dual format.
On the women's side, Navy cruised to a perfect 6-0 record in the meet, followed by Maryland (5-1), American (4-2), Mount St. Mary's (3-3), Temple (2-4), George Washington (0-5-1) and UMBC (0-5-1). Navy's Amy Watson was the top finisher in the event, finishing the 5K course in a time of 18:46.98.
On the men's side, UMBC was the top team with a 5-0 record in the six-team field followed by American (4-1), Maryland (3-2), Temple (2-3), Mount St. Mary's (1-4) and George Washington (0-5). Maryland's Alex Lundy was the individual winner with a time of 16:11.53 on the 5K Course.
Senior Liz Kessler (Mount Laurel, N.J./Paul VI) was the Mount's top finisher for the women, placing 29th overall with a time of 20:53.11. Brianne Vozzella (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin), Jessica Rafeedie (Germantown, Md./Northwest), Samantha Willox (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) and Maura Tipping (Landsdowne, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) rounded out the Mount's top five runners.
Kyle Ryan (New Market, Md./Linganore) finished 11th overall with a time of 16:27.84 to pace the Mount's men's team. Freshman Dylan Bernard (Frederick, Md./Urbana) had an impressive collegiate debut, finishing 18th in the field with a time of 16:50.25. Justin Brackett (Piont Pleasant, N.J./Toms River North), William Mitchell (Laurel, Md./DeMatha Catholic) and Kevin Morrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) rounded out the Mount's top five runners at the meet.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, September 13th, at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
