New Britain, Conn. (May 25, 2007)—Mount St. Mary’s fell to Quinnipiac, 4-1, in an elimination game in the Northeast Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Mount’s record-breaking 2007 season comes to an end. The Mount finished the year with a 35-22 mark, setting 47 school records during the season, including overall wins and NEC victories.
Tim Binkoski went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to pace the Bobcat offense while starting pitcher Pat Egan held the Mount to three hits in the complete game victory. Egan, who retired 14 straight batters from the fifth to the ninth inning, struck out four and walked one in the contest. Pete Kummerfeldt added two hits and a solo home run in the victory.
Eric Smith went 2-for-4 in the game for the Mount, ending the year with a school-record 69 hits. Stephan Fay had a double for the Mount’s other hit in the ballgame.
Quinnipiac grabbed the early lead on a Tim Binkoski RBI single in the bottom of the first. With one out, Ryan Rizzo doubled to left center and scored on Binkoski’s single to right field.
The Mount got its first run of the tournament in the top of the third inning. Mike Gioioso was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Justus Yocum followed with a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by the second baseman on the throw to first, allowing Gioioso to score the tying run.
The Bobcats regained the lead with a show of power in the bottom of the fourth. Jeff Mainetti blasted a solo home run to left-center field to snap the 1-1 tie. Two batters later, Pete Kummerfeldt belted a solo shot over the right-field fence. It was the 12th home run of the season for both Mainetti and Kummerfeldt. Binkoski hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the victory.
Mount starter Andrew Germuth (8-5) took the loss, allowing three runs in 6.1 innings of work. Germuth struck out four and walked one in the game.
Game Notes...The Mount went 0-2 in this year’s NEC Tournament to fall to 0-3 all-time in NEC Tournament games...The Mount lost to St. Francis (N.Y.) in 1998 in their only other appearance in the NEC Tournament ...Dustin Pease struck out one batter in the game, setting the Mount’s all-time strikeout record with 304 in his career...The old mark of three was set by Detroit Tiger draft pick Brian Santo (2000-03).
