College Park, Md. (April 14, 2009)--Mount St. Mary’s lost at Maryland, 13-2, in a non-conference matchup at Shipley Field on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Mount falls to 13-15 on the season.
The Terrapins (16-20) took control of the game early with four runs in the first and two more runs in the second to take a 6-0 lead. In the first, Mike Murphy doubles, A.J. Casario triple and Will Greenburg homered to cap the four-run inning.
Maryland added a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI doubles from Matthew Murakami and Murphy.
The Mount got on the scoreboard in the third when Ryan Stamp and Joe Kavanagh walked to open the inning. Stamp moved to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Tommy Flynn groundout.
The Terrapins got that run back in the bottom of the third, but the Mount cut the deficit to 7-2 on a Josh Winter sacrifice fly in the fourth. Kyle Kane walked and Shane Eyler singled with one out in the inning. The pair pulled off a double steal, setting up Winter for his RBI flyout.
Eyler finished with a pair of hits for the Mount with Jacob Darr adding one. Starting pitcher Marshall Thomason allowed six runs in 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Murakami, Murphy and Casario each had three hits to lead the Terrapins to the victory. Matt Fullerton picked up the win, allowing a pair of runs in five innings of work.
Maryland sealed the win with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the victory.
Mount St. Mary’s returns to action tomorrow with a 6:35 p.m. game at Penn State.
