Charlottesville, Va. (May 15, 2010)-Top-ranked Virginia defeated Mount St. Mary's, 18-4, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Klocker Stadium on Saturday night. Freshman Andrew Scalley paced the Mount (12-5) with three goals in the game.
Goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo made 10 saves in three quarters of play to pace the Mount in the game. Brett Schmidt had a pair of assists while Bryant Schmidt scored the Mount's other goal.
Virginia (15-1) led 5-0 after the first quarter of play behind the solid play of goalkeeper Adam Ghitelman, who made five saves in the opening period.
The Mount's Ben Trapp won the opening face-off and had a chance to give the Mount the lead just seconds into the game, but his low shot was stopped by Ghitelman.
Virginia's Shamel Bratton put the Cavaliers on top 1-0 when he beat DiBartolo 3:02 into the game after DiBartolo made a nice stop earlier in the possession. DiBartolo then turned the ball over at midfield on a clear attempt, allowing Steele Stanwick to post a wide-open goal for a 2-0 advantage just 27 seconds later.
Chris Bocklet took a nice feed from Shamel Bratton right in front of the cage and converted his 44th goal of the year to push the lead to 3-0. John Haldy and Brian Carroll scored goals 50 seconds to make it 5-0 after the first.
The Cavaliers did not waste any time extended the lead when Bocklet scored in transition 23 seconds into the second quarter. The Mount's Jake Willertz hit the post on the next possession and the Cavaliers countered in transition with a goal from Mikey Thompson. The Mount had a penalty after the goal, and Carroll's second score with a man-up made it 8-0 2:47 into the second quarter.
The Mount's Bryant Schmidt got the Mount on the scoreboard 15 seconds after Cody Lehrer hit the post when he snapped a shot from 15 yards out on a pass from twin brother Brett Schmidt on an extra-man opportunity.
Carroll, Nick O'Reilly, Shamel Bratton and Haldy all scored in the final three minutes of the first half to make the score 12-1 at the break.
Virginia outshot the Mount 32-17 in the opening half, including 21-to-8 in the second quarter. DiBartolo had eight saves in the first half while Ghitleman made seven. The Cavaliers held a commanding 25-to-11 ground ball advantage and won nine-of-14 face-offs.
In the second half, Bocklet and Shamel Bratton each completed hat tricks to give the Cavaliers a 14-1 lead with 8:24 left in the third quarter. After a stop on a shot by the Mount's Drew Dunn, Max Pomper scored with 5:16 left in the quarter for the Cavaliers before a goal by Colin Briggs extended the margin to 16-1.
Andrew Scalley's 30th goal of the season on a pass from Christian Kellett with 7.7 seconds left in the third quarter made it 16-2 heading into the final quarter.
Scalley scored 47 seconds into the final quarter with his second goal of the contest when he came out from behind the cage to bury a shot. Connor English answered with a goal with 8:17 left in the contest. Scalley completed his hat trick on a pass from Brett Schmidt with 6:38 left in the game. Tim Fuchs rounded out the scoring in the contest.
Game Notes: The Mount lost to Virginia, 19-8, in the NCAA First Round in 2003 in the school's only other appearance in the NCAA Tournament...The Mount's 12 wins this season are a school record...Cody Lehrer, who was held off the scoreboard, finished with 48 goals this season, tied for the second-best single-season mark in MSM history behind Matt Warner's 52 in 2005...The Mount is 0-8 all-time against UVA.
